Varnish and protection

PRIMER

Do I have to use (water based) acrylic primer before applying the Kalkpaint?

  • When using our Kalkpaint on surfaces that are already painted with water based/acrylic based paint and they do not have to be prepared  in any way (i.e. fix holes etc.)  you can simply apply the Kalk paint directly.

  • If you have f.ex.  high gloss paint, varnish, oil paint, wallpaper, glue residues, plastics, melamine etc. or if you use reparation materials to fix holes, cracks, joints etc. in your surface, you do have to use primer (water based, acrylic) to prevent discolouration and to get good adhesion of the Kalkpaint.

  • As well as in all other cases where you have surfaces that do not absorb paint well (like tiles, some brick and stone etc.) we do recommend using primer.

  • When using our Kalkpaint on surfaces that need to be primed, we only recommend using good quality primer.

  • Usually one layer of primer is enough and you can apply it with a roller (for walls, ceiling. etc.), or you can use a brush (for wood panels, furniture, etc.).

*(Kalklitir will soon start to offer good quality water based acrylic primer in the webshop)

Rule of thumb:

To find out if the surface absorbs well, just apply water on it, if the water runs down the wall easily you need to use a primer, if the water absorbs in to the surface you don´t need the primer. If you are in doubt, we simply recommend you to use primer.

Wood:

For wood application, where you have knots, we recommend to use proper primer/blocker to stop the knots from bleeding through the Kalk paint (consult with professionals for best result).

Drying:

It is very important to let all materials used, prior to using Kalk paint, dry properly, according to manufacturer,  to avoid any discoloration of the Kalk paint.

Protection of Kalk paint

It is possible to use a water based varnish to protect surfaces painted with our Kalk paint from oil, grease etc. We offer a good quality two component varnish, (mix the StucVernisPU 1:3 and stir very well, then let it rest for 10 minutes, (defoaming)).

StucVernisPU can be used either mixed with hardener or without it, (necessary to mix with hardener on surfaces exposed

to heavy use).

Please note: there is only one correct way to apply the StucVernisPU !

(Firm, Quick and in Thin layers!)

  • StucVernisPU should always be vigorously rolled on to the surface in thin layers.

  • Use a new felt roller of max. 5 mm. and never use a wet roller as doing so will dilute the first square meters and the surface will become white.

  • Roll out in the same method as you did the Kalk paint (i.e. up and down or x-strokes using firm, quick, strokes).

  • The first layer should not be diluted, and you have to apply it very quickly, not leaving any traces of excess varnish, because these spots can result in "white reaction"  (that can not be sanded down, so redoing the whole process must then be done!).

  • This results in a quick drying layer, that will be dry after 20-30 minutes.

  • The second, and all following layers may be diluted 2-5% with water and applied in a thicker layer.

  • Apply one, two, or more layers until surface is fully covered and allow proper drying time in between each layer.

  • Allow 5 - 24 hours drying time between each layer, if more than 24 hour have passed you have to sandpaper between layers.

  • For smaller surfaces like furniture etc. you can use a clean dry brush, and do it the same ways as described.

  • Protection layer will always effect the colour nuance.

Note: If StucVernisPU is used without the hardener, the water, chemical and wear resistance will be less.

Make sure the Kalk paint has dried for a minimum of 72 hours before applying the varnish, and always better to wait longer

(1-2 weeks if possible) and always allow time for the varnish to dry properly between layers (5-24 hours is using StucVernisPU),

and afterwards it needs 7 days to fully cure, before this certainly not entrust with water.

Have in mind that once the surface has been varnished, and you want to re paint it, you need to use a primer first, before applying paint (Kalk paint or other).

If some other type of varnish is to be used on our Kalk paint, it is always recommened to do a test on a small peace of f.ex. cardboard before applying it directly to the Kalk painted surface.

Paint at least one layer of Kalk paint on the cardboard, let dry, then apply the varnish for better evaluation.
